QoE - High SSL Response Time

Part of having alerts is knowing what to do with them. Where would I begin to look at a problem with high SSL response time with our exchange server? Screenshot below shows our exchange server at 12 second response time for SSL. The 700ms server is just our Orion server. I put it on there to see how QoE works.

QoE helps identify whether the performance issue is related to network latency, bandwidth congestion, etc. vs. slow application/server performance. In your case the web application performance is not due to network latency since that accounts for only 1ms. The majority of the time spent waiting was on the application itself. You just eliminated 50% of potential causes in seconds. That's the value that QoE provides. Now that you know where to narrow your attention, you can use things like SAM's AppInsight for IIS that will tell you what pages the server is spending the majority of its time processing. Expanding the URL shows the individual user requests, the client IP address, the verb used and any query parameters passed. This is helpful to understand what sections of the site or web application are taking the longest to load.

You can also leverage Web Performance Monitor's Waterfall Charts to understand what content on that page is taking the longest to load.

Thanks for sharing, may I ask who did you get the "Top 20 Page Request by Average Server Execution Time" that shows each page performance?

This issue occurs when there's no response from server side or the server is too slow. This happens at the Handshake layer of the SSL protocol where asymmetric cryptographic keys for encrypting and decrypting the data are exchanged.

The activation time of a certificate may also depend on the availability of Let’s Encrypt resources and a series of limitations of the Certificate Authority itself. These limitations include:

Certificates per registered domain (50 per week)
Names per certificate (up to 100)
Unique subdomains (up to 5,000 per week)
Duplicate certificates (5 per week)

To check out the details of these limitations, please refer to the Let’s Encrypt Rate Limits. I will also use Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates to demonstrate practical ideas from now onwards. Before going with this process I would suggest you create a backup for your website to avoid data loss and then install SSL on managed WordPress hosting that offers it free of cost.
