Can you still use the alert manager application after the upgrade to NPM 11.5 or is it strictly web-based now? I see where the alert manager application is still in the C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion folder and it runs?
You can still use the original Alert Manager at this time. I would however recommend using the new web based alerts, and convert any alerts manually that did not convert with your upgrade. I have found the new setup and organization a little easier in the new web version.
For example on the triggers you can organize your queries by splitting them into two parts. One to identify the interfaces or Nodes, and then the condition to trigger the alert. You can also set how long the condition has to exist to trigger an alert. I would also recommend using a similar query on the reset side, especially if you want to make sure the condition remains reset for a longer period of time before reseting the alert (avoiding alert e-mail storms for a flapping circuit).
With that said it may take some time to convert any remaining alerts, but realize that it is likely that the old alert manager will go away in a future version.
I would recommend using web based alerts.
It seems that all of the applications are going strictly web-based. I didn't have any issue with and of our custom alerts getting converted over. Some of our network engineers preferred the applications over the web-based, but they will just have to go with the new way of doing things
I think once they get the hang of the new web interface, and some of it's hidden features I think they will come around.
For me I think training admins on the newer interface is a little easier. amstephen87 with Loop1 recently showed me how it all works out, and I'm not looking back.
The new web based alert mechanism is cluttered and does not give you the ability to scroll through all of your component objects. This was raised in many other threads (usability).
The web based interface is terrible for us as we are unable to effectively create component monitors when the picker is not all inclusive.
ah yes, I do remember issues especially when needed to search for a field. the recent/favrorites helps find them faster. Compared to other web query generators I've worked with it seems like they are heading down the right path, hopefully they can fix any issues with the UI.
Also the Simulation Part Does not work at all for some of my alerts, seems like some sort of database query issue when selecting a device to simulate on screen.
My entire team is not happy with it. I'm not just doing my regular trolly whining. I'm not alone in the belief that the UI is an unusable cluster F creating component alerts.
But they have more than enough issues to deal with these days.
