Automating Dependency creation

Has anybody figured out a way to automate dependency creation?

We have about 150 sites monitored in NPM, and manually creating a group for each site gets tedious very quickly. We have all sites grouped by SNMP location, and have a custom property of Switch set for all switches at a site, so adding a group for the site would be fairly easy programatically.

So a 2 line dynamic query that matches Location is <sitename> and Switch is True is all we need to get the devices into the group, then find the same SNMP location, and the custom property of Router set to True to find the upstream router.

Has anybody done anything like this, or do you just find an available intern and make them do the tedious work for you?

jbresley, although I don't have a good answer for you and I've not heard of any customers who have automated this process, I can tell you it is something we hear regularly and consider as a feature request. To be honest, we won't be able to get to this very soon, but if you find a way before we can implement a solution for this in the product, please share it with the community as many people would benefit from this.

I just chugged my way through it muttering under my breath the whole time, but after it was done, I haven't had to go back. I only had 50 sites, so you'd prolly end up cursing out loud by the time you get to site 130 or so.
