Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide better instructions than the SolarWinds Success Center in configuring the integration between Orion and Microsoft Azure?

I have followed the "steps" for what should get this working in the following links, Link 1 Link 2 but these links barley provide any information at all. 

I created a Azure AD App in my Azure Active Directory for SolarWinds. This is where the instructions lack from SolarWinds as I'm not entirely sure if I have everything here set correctly. All it has at this point is the account and a client secret.

I then granted this app the contributor role on the Azure subscription holding our resource groups.

The problem now, is after adding the account in SolarWinds via the Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring Settings, and using the information requested about the app id, tenant id, subscription id, etc... the account adds successfully, but shows no "instances" or "VM"s. Am I suppose to see something here? 

Any insight / experience on setting this up would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your feedback about the SAM documentation. To avoid conflicting information in multiple places, we cover features that span multiple Orion Platform products, such as cloud monitoring, in a single place: the Orion Platform Administrator Guide. Specifically, you'll find details about setting up cloud accounts in Monitor cloud instances and VMs.

Based on your input and similar feedback from product stakeholders, I will work to improve the connection between the SAM and Orion Platform docs in regard to cloud monitoring. Specifically, I can add a topic similar to this topic from the NPM Administrator Guide, which includes the following text that applies to SAM also:

Before you begin

• Ensure that you have configured your Microsoft Azure cloud account to allow integration with the Orion Platform.
• Prepare credentials necessary for configuring the Orion Platform to access your Azure cloud.
• To monitor the Azure cloud, you must use the mail polling engine.

For more details, see Monitor cloud instances and VMs in the Orion Platform documentation.

Please note that while we strive to provide key details about using SAM, we have to tread carefully when describing how third-party products operate in our Admin Guides for reasons such as:

• Cloud service providers roll out changes in their UI with little or no warning.
• Customer environments vary widely.
• Third-party docs may use multiple terms to refer to the same value. For example, I've seen Client ID referred to as an Application ID, Application (client) ID, and an Application Key in the Azure docs and the Azure Portal. (Here's a KB we created to help with that.) 

While we work on improving the SAM docs, my recommendation is to review Monitor cloud instances and VMs (Orion Platform Admin Guide) and then refer to the following Success Center articles, as necessary:

• Configure Microsoft Azure for cloud monitoring in the Orion Platform
• Add an Azure Active Directory app for cloud monitoring in the Orion Platform
• Configure Azure IAM permissions for cloud monitoring in the Orion Platform
• Find Microsoft Azure account credentials
