Is this possible at all? If so how?
Have 2 Brocade devices that we are wanting to monitor a big more indepth and been asked if this is possible.
You can't import MIBs on your own, and Orion uses 2 databases for MIBs.
Native MIB support for NPM/SAM is located in the SystemObjectID database that is controlled by SW and updated usually on Major Feature releases.
The other is the MIB database that you can download and update on your own from SW. This is used for the UnDP Pollers you can build for device information that SW doesn't support out of the box.
If you aren't finding the MIBs in that DB then you may want to do a MIB walk on those devices and post it here on Thwack for the SW Dev team and they can add them to the MIB DB for UnDP and you can then easily build extra pollers to pull data you currently aren't seeing.
These devices I would imagine would be monitored in NPM any way as they aren't servers nor have I seen anyone log into them for Application monitoring. Brocade devices are switches/fabric switches that are considered network equipment. They are commonly found in Peer exchanges and as FC switches for SAN's.
SAM only uses MIBs for the SNMP Trap Receiver. NPM's Universal Device Poller also uses MIBs for creating custom pollers. Both of these utilize the Orion MIB Database which is updated weekly. The latest version is always available for download through your customer portal. You can submit MIBs to be added to the database by emailing the MIBs to support@solarwinds.com. These MIBs should be added to the database and available to download through the customer portal the following week.
Thanks but we are not using NPM we only have SAM installed. So was more intrigued to find out how you would be able to use MIBS within SAM.
Was looking for any suggestions on best practise for using MIBs from the likes of Brocade into SAM.
SAM has no use for MIBs beyond the trap receiver. In what way are you trying to utilize MIBs?
Basically to see if we could pull in any further monitoring for our netapp solution rather than just PING
If you're interesting in monitoring your Netapp storage I recommend checking out SolarWinds Storage Manager.
