Description of the different Alert State in Advanced Alert

We are using NPM 9.0 SP2 and I'm working on Advanced Alerting.

In this case I found in the Active Alerts view the fields "Alert State" with 1, 2 or 3 as a possible value.

For my better understanding, what are the differences?

Try to search in the documentation, but ... not really successful.

Hi,

So your more verbose explanation about 1 and 2 is correct. 1 is waiting for the time lapse portion of the trigger condition.

3 and 4 are if an alert have a reset condition. So if the reset condition is met initially and there is a time requirement, then it goes into 3. Once the time requirement has been met or if there no time associated with the reset condition, the alert will go into state 4.

So a more complete answer is:

1 - trigger condition met but not for configured period of time

2 - trigger condition met (if there was a time condition this was met too)

3 - reset condition met but not for configured period of time

4 - reset condition met (if there was a time condition this was met too)

Yes.

Within this you can find the field two times.

The first one is numbered one (1 and 2 in this case; there is also a 3 possible) and the second one is graphically.

Not triggered
Trigger condition met but waiting for the sustain interval to elapse
Fully triggered

When I look into my actual monitor, ....

the specific cases are not 100% clear to me. And thsi is what my customer requests from my monitoring.

What is your customer requesting from you specficially? Those specific fields/values are not documented.

Nevertheless the fields are not documented, somebody should be aware on the deeply meaning, isn't it?

Hi,

Here is a quick description of the AlertStatus States

1 = Trigger Pending
2 = Triggered
3 = Reset Pending
4 = Reset

OK, what we have here is a failure to communicate!

Denny, bshopp and Karlo have given slightly different explanations of the alert states in Orion.

I can only say that I have repeated my simple experiment and still get the same results.

A simple node down alert with no escalation options posts to alert state 2 as soon as the node goes down, so this must be the fully triggered state.

If I add a 5 minute delay escalation to the email action, then the initial state will be 1 (triggered with delay interval not elapsed), but it changes to state 2 after 5 minutes.

Each alert has a reset condition configured with an email to be sent. I get the reset emails, but I have yet to see an alert state 3 or 4 as described by Karlo.

Also, how can there be a "not triggered" or "trigger pending" state for an alert? An alert that has not happened won't show up anyway. Unless you are referring to the action part of the alert.

In other words, either we all have major functionality issues in the field, or SW staff needs to get together on the definitions. Or, am I still missing something in your explanations?

To sum up, it seems that:

1 - alert triggered but an escalation exists that has not been triggered

2 - fully triggered

3 - ? (have not seen this state)

4 - ? (have not seen this state)

One more thing too. What determines how long it takes before a triggered alert shows up in System Manager? I find that I have to hit Refresh to see the alert even after the node icon changes to red. Is that normal?
