Groups in NPM causing excessive polls

if i have 1 esx server, 1 router, 1 switch, and 4 virtual machines and i setup a group called Branch1SW group and added everything physically connected to the switch, then make the router the parent of the group. How does that affect polling? Will Orion poll the router, then the group then everything under the group, then poll the monitored VM, the group, and then everthing under the group again causing excessive polls?

Solarwinds doesn't automatically make the router the parent of the group, you would need to define dependencies accordingly.  With all devices UP they all will be polled still for stats for example.  I believe if a parent device is DOWN then it won't even try polling child devices, but that only matters when there is an outage.
