Cisco Catalyst 2960xx DRAM

Hi all,

I am planning an upgrade to all my Catalyst 2960xx switches. I have several flavours of model and as such need to determine that each has the correct amount of system/ DRAM. I can't seem to find a field in the reports to cover this and I tried creating a custom poller the summed the values of memorypoolused and memorypool free, but that give me a value greater than that output by sh ver.

Has anyone else come across a similar requirement and if so, did you solve it?

I figured this out. Turns out there are actually 3 reports in NCM (Memory in Cisco devices, Flash memory & flash file system) that can give me the information I need. I need to work a little magic with Excel to combine them all into one single report, but essentially there was no need to build any new reports or SNMP pollers.

Hi,

Make sure you verify the OIDs in different switches because some times the firmware version may cause the problem while responding to oids with value.

ciscoMemoryPoolUsed - OID - 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.48.1.1.1.5

Indicates the number of bytes from the memory pool that are currently in use by applications on the managed device.

ciscoMemoryPoolFree - OID - 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.48.1.1.1.6

Indicates the number of bytes from the memory pool that are currently in use by applications on the managed device.

Also, Try to use "show memory" command in ssh/telnet session and then try to compare. Thanks!

These are the OIDs I am using. These return a table of 3 columns (processor, IO & driver text) which is expected and what is returned when running sh mem on the device. I sum each of the columns in the respective MIB output and then total both together to give me the grand total. The issue is that the total I get is much different than that shown when running sh ver.

For example I have a WS-C2960-24PC-L running 12.2(55)SE10, which shows '(PowerPC405) processor (revision E0) with 65536K bytes of memory.' when I run the sh ver command. When totalling the SNMP values I get a total of 27801K. Have I missed a step somewhere perhaps?

It's hard to understand why there isn't a simple SNMP value for total DRAM installed or some other simple method to loop through a list of switches and gather that detail so you can prepare for an IOS upgrade.
