"Reason for xyz" field against alert

Hi,

What I want to do is simple in concept, but probably difficult in practice.

I'd like to have the facility to add a "reason for..." note to an event/alert. E.g. when I receive a "NODE rebooted at 16/08/2011 03:22" alert, I'd like to go in and have somewhere to put "Fred pulled the power cord" so that I can generate a report each month showing all the reasons for that months reboots.

Possibly the same with other events (node down, interface down etc)

Any ideas?

Each alert that is triggered can have a note tied to it. It is definitely possible to create a report showing the active alerts and their associated notes (I used this) but I don't know if it's possible to show a cleared alert and if there was a note associated with it.

I would look at trying that.

Using Advanced Alert Manager tool,you could a configure a new Alert.In the "trigger actions" tab,there is an option "Log Alert to NetPerfMon Event Log".You could define the message which you want to show on the GUI events log.Once you have the events log writing data according to your needs,it should be easy to get a report generated.

Maybe I havent explained my requirments well enough.

What I need is a way to add the notes AFTER the event. I know how to have the alert generated and added to the event log. What I need to do now is add a note to that event explaining WHY it happened.

To use my original example - a node reboots. The reason for this, after it has been logged is "someone pulled he cable"

I don't think what you want is possible within NPM.

Alerts are not persistant (AFAIK) so you cannot tie any message to them indefinitely. Events are persistant (limited by your data retention settings), but Events don't have any properties that you can use for 'reason for' data.

If I was in your shoes I'd probably write a simple webpage to let people enter in reasons against the EventID that gets stored in a separate table. Requires a bit of knowledge of Orion database and PHP/DB coding etc, but definitely not too hard if you're comfortable with that.
