Custom Property to link to external files

I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to create a custom property for all devices that will display a link to a network file share storing documents relevant to that node (such as Visio diagrams). I would like to create a custom property for each device that appears in the node view as a link that when clicked, launches that particular file as mapped in the custom property. Has anyone done this ?
