How does reporting and alerting work with multiple pollers and webservers?

I am confused about how reporting works in Orion when there are multiple pollers installed and even an additional web server.

I know that reports are not stored in the Orion database, they are stored ina folder in the root Orion folder on the applications server, right? Do I need to replicate all reports across all polling servers, or just on the primary server?

For alerts, as I understand it, alerts must be replicated to all additional polling engiens, but this can be done with the Import/Export option. Am I correct?

So, lets say I create an alert on the primary poller to alert me when nodes that it is monitoring go down. If I replicate that alert to a secondary poller, I will have to edit the alert to encompass nodes that the secondary alert monitors. Right?

For the reports; yes they are stored on the local system in a folder. In order for those reports to be available on a different "additional web server" you will need to copy them over.

For alerts, if you create advanced alerts, those are stored in the database and therefore only have to be created once. My understanding is that basic alerts are specific to the poller that you create them on. Because of this I would stick with advanced alerts if you are using multiple pollers.

Advanced alerts are basically just SQL queries in the DB that are ran at a scheduled interval and tripped if they are true.

Thanks byrona, but are you sure about advanced alerts? If they must only be created once across all pollers then why do you have the Import/Export options in configuring advanced alerts?

Yah, here is a post where Denny from SW points this out (I think I have seen others as well)...

The Import/Export function for Advanced Alerts would allow different users in the SW community to share complex alerts that they have created. Additionally if you are running multiple instances of Orion you can move Advanced Alerts from one to another.

OK, let me restate what I have read to be sure I have it straight.

Reports must be copied from poller to poller as they are not stored in the database. If you want to be able to generate a certain report from an additional web server, that report must reside in the reports folder on that web server.

Basic alerts are the same way. They must be replicated to each polling engine in order to be active against the elements polled by the engine. That means that conditions and filters may need to be altered to be applicable to the new polling engine.

Advanced alerts are stored in the database and in fact involve the evaluation frequency setting that controls the interval at which the DB is polled for active triggers. So an advanced alert can be created only on the main poller and can apply to any element on any poller in the network.

Any mistakes in that summary?

Well, that's all correct based on my understand but then again, you are Certified and I am not so really, you should be telling me if that is correct! = )

If I may jump back into the discussion. I'm not sure what borgan was actually trying to do, but maybe he (or she) was just trying to restate what he read in the post, not necessarily what he understood. Just a thought.
