Greetings,
My company has been a SolarWinds customer for a couple of years now. It was purchased and brought in by individuals who are no longer with the company, and as I inherited it, we use it very simply "out of the box" - we let the NPM poll the network, we added resources, set up simple e-mail alerts for trouble - and that's about it.
I've come to understand just how robust NPM is, and I want to really start utilizing it. I find some of the documentation (on both sides) to be confusing or find that it doesn't go into sufficient depth. I've been searching the forums for a few days now, but always seem to find info around the edges of what I want to accomplish.
How do the MIB/OID files compliment or work together? For example, I have two large *.mib files from VMware for our ESX servers. Orion NPM doesn't know what to do with them. I realized however, that it may not be NPM's job to know what to do with MIBs, and that the MIBs may need to be configured on the host. At that point NPM gathers what it can based on the host MIB - is this correct?
If this is the case - are there any good tutorials here or elsewhere on how to manage this entire SNMP/MIB business? If this is not the case, would one of you be willing to expand on the subject for me and "set me straight"?
I've gone through the Custom Poller video tutorial, and found it helpful on the step-by-step front - but there still appears to be some foundational understanding that I lack.
Thanks in advance -
