Monitoring A service/process using mibs?

Is it possible to find out if a service or process is running using mibs?

If I do a mib walk on a server it shows all running services.

If i create a universal device poller this is shows on the website.

I'm trying to get an alert if this service stops using the mib value.

Is this possible? We have not purchased apm so can't use that.

When using the UnDP type in this for an OID "1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2".

Then click browse MIB Tree.

When you expand the table you will see 8 items.

Focus on these two items.
hrSWRunName
hrSWRunStatus

If you are wanting to just watch one process and not all of them. You will need to use MIB walk to find the exact OID.

But with info you can setup a poller to watch the running status of any process on your server. I used this on Window Servers without any issues.

This is great.

I have done a mib walk and can see that hrSWrunName and status.

Only the hrSWrunstatus does not say which process it is.

There is a long list of about 15 processes that are running .All in a state of 1(up and running).

I could stop the process i guess but is there a better way to correlate the NAME with the status on the mib?

The process/mib number won't change will it?

You will have to match up hrSWRunName with hrSWRunStatus. The ID numbers will match up. Or try turning off the process and look for what turns to zero. But this could cause issues if the server is being used by others, best to try that idea during an outage window.

The MIB OIDs would only change if you add/remove programs a lot.
