How to monitor\configure to get /var/log/messages for SUN/Linux systems
Once the agent is installed on the box you then need to configure a tool/connector for that log.
Hi Byrona,
thanks for your kind reply. i am new in Solarwind can you give little hint how to configure it ?
Just like non-agent device, as far as I can understand, let's take a look on the video for adding non-agent device.
Can i get the url for video tutorial...
If you have already installed the LEM, you should be able to find the video link on the first page of the LEM Console - Ops Center, under Help -> Videos
Hi Ckceric,
We don't have LEM (Log and Event Manger?) installed in our environment. We have NPM and SAM. Do i still can use or i have to install LEM to read logs and configure Alerts ?
This is the LEM forum, so we may assume you are asking about LEM.
To use LEM or not, it depends on you purpose and means of monitoring. If you would only like to "catch" and count the keywords in the log/text file, you can use the "Log Parser" template in SAM. Try study it and see if it suit you needs. Log files are not automatically monitored under NPM and SAM.
LEM would do something more like event correlation.
thanks Ckceric i'll check and will reply back
If you are using NPM and SAM, then NPM has a Syslog service running on the sever as part of the normal configuration. At this point all you need to do is configure your Sun/Linux systems to forward their logs to your Orion server. Once that is finished you should be able to go to Message Center in the Orion WebUI and see the logs. If you want to alert on the logs there is a program on you Orion server called Syslog Viewer that you will need to launch and from within there you can configure log alerts.
Hope this helps.
To the Community Managers, since it seems this post is about NPM Syslog this post should probably be moved over there to that space.
