Hi All
I’ve got a question about a utilisation graph for one of our core links. The average 95th Percentile Receive figure is 92.0206 % but the average receive utilisation floats around at 40% to 50%.
I need to fully understand the difference between these figures as I need to know if the link is heavily loaded or not.
I've read the articles on the 95th percentile in Thwack, which indicates that 95th percentile figure is based on 5 minute samples. I have the polling intervals set to 5 minutes within Solarwinds admin settings for polling (not sure if this is related)
Q1. Am I correct in thinking that the 95th Percentile Receive calculation of 92% on the attached graph, means that 95% of all the 5 minute samples were somewhere/anywhere below 92% utilisation. However, would this then mean that there were still quite a large number of 5 min sample figures recording a high percentage value in order for it to still be averaging 92% having ignored the highest 5% of the sample figures ?
Q2. The Average receive utilisation is trending up from the beginning of 2010 but fluctuates from 20% to 50% with the odd spike above this. What is this average utilisation figure telling me and how does it relate to the 95th percentile figure ?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards
Dan
