SAM Licensing Question

Hi all,

Would anyone please help me to understand how SAM licensing works?

If, for example, I have AL150 license - what does it mean? I have read somewhere that 150 is the largest number I can have among Nodes, Volumes and Components. So, my understanding is - if I have 149 Nodes, 149 Volumes AND 149 Components - I am OK - is this correct?

crippsb@hcdsb.org, I'm afraid you are mistaken. SAM is licensed similar to NPM, replacing Interfaces for Components. That is to say that SAM is licensed based on Nodes, Volumes, or Component Monitors. Whichever is highest. That means with an AL150 you can monitor 150 nodes, 150 volumes AND 150 Component Monitors simultaneously. Overlapping Orion license categories are also additive. Which is to say that if you owned for example, an NPM SL100 license and a SAM AL150 license, you could monitor 250 Nodes, 250 volumes, 100 interfaces, and 150 component monitors.

Speaking from the world of windows

SAM adds up quickly so you need to have an idea what you want to monitor. We ended up going unlimited in a similar sizing.

1 Node = 1 Monitor

1 Node + 1 Volume on the node = 2 Monitors

1 Node + 1 Volume + 1 Monitored component = 3 Monitors

There are templates that contain several monitors inside them IE, A Windows 2003 - 2012 template is around 10 -15 (we removed a few)

1 Node + 1 Volume + 10 Windows components = 12 Monitors

10 Nodes + 10 Volumes (1 per node) + 100 Windows components (10 components per server) = 120 Monitors

100 Nodes + 100 Volume (1 per node) + 1000 Windows components (10 components per server) = 1200 Monitors

When you add in other templates

AppInsight for SQL 50 components (and it's awesome)

AppInsight for Exchange 50 components (our next big monitoring project)

Active Directory 31 components.

As far as I understand AL150 license is for SAM and I don't think Nodes or Volumes are linked with this license type (149 Nodes, 149 Volumes). For Nodes or Volumes you would be rather using SL150.

Its just that your components are linked with AL150 (149 Components). And yes you can not exceed 150 Components when you are using this license.

Probably the count is considered for your active components not the once that have been unmanged.

I believe that SAM on it's own does allow you to add Nodes and Volumes.You do not need to have additional SL license to monitor nodes (unless I am getting it wrong). As crippsb@hcdsb.org has suggested - it seems that for AL150 the number 150 stays for a total number of monitors. However, the following info from NPM FAQ does not give me a peace:

Is this the case with SAM as well - that's what I don't understand

I believe he is correct .. the license is based on how many component monitors you use... i also went with unlimited as we use a ton

Alex Slv, SAM does in deed monitor nodes and volumes. SAM is available standalone (separate from NPM), yet can still be integrated with other Orion products like Virtualization Manager, Web Performance Monitor, IP Address Manager, etc. without requiring NPM at all.
