Creating a custom property for a node

I can create a custom property with no problem, and it shows up in the "Edit Custom Property Values" when I open it up from the Node Details page, but it does not show up on the Node Details page when in a null state.  The Custom Properties currently existing do show up when I change the null value to anything.  That is not true for the Custom Properties I am creating.

The gist of the problem is that I can create custom properties, but they do not show up on the Node page.  I need the newly created Custom Property to appear whether it is null or not.  Many of the exisitng custom properties appear whether null or not.  There must be a field that dictates under what conditions the property appears.  Does anyone know the answer?   Thanks!
