How to use SQL Server 2005-2008 Performance Template on a Named Instance?

Hello,

I have been applying this template to the SQL servers in our organization...and have ran into a hitch. It seems I cannot get this to work (neither the sql or wmi versions) on a sql server that is using a named instance...it only seems to work when using it on servers that were set up w/ the default instance. This may seem like a silly question but, what am I missing here? Does the template not work with named instances?

Now it looks like the error I mentioned earlier. Please check the WHERE conditions of the SQL queries.

If the condition for "object_name" starts with "SQLServer:" you have to change WHERE conditions for each component according this example

From:

WHERE object_name = 'SQLServer:General Statistics' AND counter_name = 'User Connections'

To:

WHERE object_name LIKE '%:General Statistics%' AND counter_name = 'User Connections'

Please let us know if this is the issue or not.

Hi Lukas,

This actually isn't my issue....the problem I'm having is getting the tempalte to make the connection to the remote SQL server....because its using a named instance. I cannot connect SSMS to the SQL server unless i use SERVERNAME\INSTANCE....and I'm not finding a way to adjust the APM template to allow me to conenct to SERVERNAME\INSTANCE....it wants to only connect to the SERVERNAME....which fails.

If you use the template with SQL Server User Experience Monitors there is setting called "SQL Server Instance" where you can define the DB instance. When you have DB server with different instance than default you have to update this setting for each component in the template.

Please let us know if this is your case or not.

OK, I found and did that…now I’m getting an error on every counter saying “query must return at least 1 row” or “query result is null”. Its not giving me the connection failure now, but it still doesn’t seem to be working. Do I need to change another setting also when using a named instance?
