ISSUE With "Microsoft Message Queue Fills Directory with Orphaned Files"

Hi All,

we have Solarwinds in our environment to monitor our stuff, the issue i am running in to that we getting this error. " Microsoft Message Queue Fills Directory with Orphaned Files" MSMQ Max size limit set 1GB, we do not want to exceed over that number. this monitor should be less then 800 MB. otherwise polling will stop working.

we are getting alerts for that issue. any help would be greatly appreciative. thanks in advance.

What are your server Specs, also the SQL server Specs.

i am guessing your Main poller can‘t write the data fast enough to the database.

I am not sure what cause MSMQ go so high all sudden.but the next day it back to normal. but I would like to find out what cause that issue. because we set limit to 1GB. and don't want to increase that limit. it was up to 800MB. Polling frequency set to 300 seconds. I assume server memory some where between 8 -12Gb. but we have to reboot the server.

one of the fix were to delete some of the Orphaned Files. so after reboot we didn't had to do that. so hummmm......

we have reviewed that doc but before we can apply any changes we had to reboot the system due to the outage. so as reboot wasn't planned but it seem to fix it. but the question that come to my mind now. if that was the original problem reboot should not have fix it and we still be having same "Orphaned files" issue. so since doc mention to delete some files which we didn't do so that means the files are still there issue is no longer exist.

I've noticed that ever since we installed the latest hotfix's I've ran into issues with MSMQ folder sizes. To be clear, we've always had an issue, but after the latest round of hotfixes it's definitely gotten worse.

We have 9 additional polling engines, 3 web servers and a super beefy dedicated physical SQL server. Curious how many other people are having this issue and aren't aware of it? I have alerts built to notify me then the folder hits the warning threshold.

The screenshots appear to show the server is paging, which usually means there is insufficient memory in the server. How does this relate to your MSMQ queues? Is the paging occurring on the Orion or SQL server?

aLTeRego - That would be the handy work of too many chef's in the kitchen.. We have users with elevated rights who don't understand when they edit a chart table that it effects everyone who shares their view. Unfortunately I can't track down the people who do this because Solarwinds doesn't log who made edit resource changes and when. I've pretty much stopped paying attention to the titles of charts because it's always different.

But I digress... yes, those charts are without a doubt MSMQ folder sizes. Here's a Perfstack view of the MSMQ folder sizes for all of our polling engines. MSMQ folder sizes started increasing across the board right after we installed the latest hotfixes.

That is definitely abnormal. Usually when the queues fill it is because the Orion server has lost its connection to the database server, or the database can't keep up with the volume of data. This seems to rise indefinitely, then drops suddenly. Is there any correlation to the time when the queues empty?
