alert questions

Hi. I just created 4 new applications, each being 1 server with 2 monitors on them, each with 4 services. So I am monitoring 8 services in 2 groups on 4 servers.

I want to configure an alert so that it will email out if these services stop or hang. I cant seem to figure out how to write it correctly.

I created an advanced alert, but I dont know how to just have it monitor these 4 servers, since I want a different list of people to be notified for this. Should I add a line with the field node name is equal to value (server name)

but how would it know to go for any of them. The syntax is a bit confusing. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

See below an example. This is how I would set it up as per what you detailed. There might be a better way to do it, but that one should work.

Then in your Alert Email action, use the ${ComponentName} and ${ComponentStatus} variables to write you message.

Which type of Component do you use to monitor these services? SNMP or WMI?

If you are using SNMP, set the component type condition to 8, if you are using WMI set it to 1 (see APM_ComponentDefinition table for further info).

I set up the alert as suggested and it never triggered.

I set the component status to 8 since I am using snmp. The application itself showed that the services were down, and on my monitor page it showed the app as having a problem, but no alerts triggered. I know alerting is working because we have tons of others, and when I was testing this particular new one I created, it initally was sending out alerts. Here is a screenshot, I wonder why it doesnt alert. Under General, enable this alert is checked (duh), set to check every 1 minute. Under alert suppression, nothing is listed. Time of day is default, from 12:00 to 11:59. Any ideas??

I suggest you to open a support ticket and attach the diagnostics. It contains a dump of the AlertDefinitions table that will show further details about your alert.
