Giant .ldf file

We have started supporting a new customer with Orion on one of their servers. The .ldf file is 47Gb in size. I don't really know Orion, so having read a lot of posts here, and consulting my DBA's, I have done all of the steps I would think necessary to shrink this file, to no avail (retention times down to 1 day; database maintenance performed etc etc). Even SQL Admin will not let me shrink it beyond 44Gb.

The .mdf file is only 117Mb.

Can someone please help?!

What version of Orion are they using? This behavior was addressed in later versions.

Can you have your DBA truncate the transaction log? If this is not possbile here are a few suggestions-

First try to manually run the database maintenance. This will take some time since it seems the log file has grown considerably.

Close Orion and stop all polling services (you can do this by going to Start -> Programs -> SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor -> Advanced Features -> Shutdown NetPerfMon. Go to File -> Stop all services.)

Open the Orion System Manager and go to File -> Database Maintenance. You should have 2 options - Run Nightly Maintenance, or Compact. Choose the Compact option and let it run.

If you have no drive space at all, you may encounter an error stating the log file is too full to write any further transactions. If this happens, you will need to delete the log file altogether.

- If that is what you decide Please! back up your database if at all possible prior to following these steps.

In the Orion Database Manger, right-click on the NetPerfMon database and choose "Detach".

After the service completes, it will give you a pop-up window telling you where the MDF and the LDF files are stored. Navigate to that directory, and delete ONLY the LDF file.

Go back into the database manager, right-click on your SQL server, and choose "Attach Database."

Select the MDF file, and hit okay.

Once the database is attached, you should be able to run the Compact utility mentioned above.

You are truly a giant among men The first thing I'd done about 20 times! The second worked a treat.

They have version 7 by the way. It seems this is a little out of date. I had better suggest an upgrade.

When i go to my File -> Database Maintenance i get a pop to start like the screen shot below. Am i doing something wrong??
