Hi,

We currently have a number of the different modules from SolarWinds and i am wondering what peoples thoughts are as to what is the best way to get the most from them from and install point of view

the modules we have are;

NPM

LEM

NTA

NTM

SAM

Should all of these be installed on there own box or together?

thoughts and reasons why ?

Yes, you can have all the modules on the application server. The best practices require a separated NetFlow Storage Database, good new about this one is that you don't need an extra SQL license, the storage database is a built-in database installed with the installation package. I would have two separate disks to point the production data and backup data in different disks.

With the application server, you are good up to 10k elements. The Orion multi-module system guidelines for a SolarWinds NPM installation - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support mentioned by the neomatrix1217 is the best way to go. It will tell you based on your licenses.

One thing they don't address as much is the database maintenance, the database maintenance that runs every night. However, the DM only aggregates or "rolls up" historical data based on retention settings, it could rebuild fragmented indexes if enabled. So, to have real database maintenance we need to use the MS SQL best practices such as DBCC (Transact-SQ) .

Personally, I am no DBA, but I did some research and some links are pretty useful. Like Should I run DBCC checkdb before full backups? Or after? and Quick ORION database health check.

I think all of those can live on the same box depending on the size of the deployment. I would put your NTA DB on a separate box.

How many Nodes? How many LEM objects? How man SAM apps? How many Netflow interfaces are you collecting?

Also, and sort of unrelated, but if anyone ever has questions on Installation order, a smart support guy once told me this..........

I would use this order for a new installation. I would also bring up the web site after each module install and flip through a few screens, including the Licenses Details before proceeding to
the next module install.

These all should be installed on the same box to keep the integration on the web console as orioncrack stated the NTA FSDB should be installed on a separate box as well as MS SQL. In your scenario you should have three servers your applications server , SQL server and NTA FSDB see below for your system requirements.

I'm with orioncrack and neomatrix1217 on this. You need 3 servers. Application server, DB server and NetFlow server (NTA Server). I would double the max of the required system requirements on the Application and NTA servers depending on how big you feel your environment is going to get... so instead of 16GB RAM make it 32GB.
