Does APM actually test any services?

I was under the impression that the new release of the application monitor was going to do a little more than tell you if an executable is running or not.

It was my understanding that it was the intent of Solarwinds to add the ability to actually test a service since just because a service is running doesn't mean its functioning properly...

Anybody?

APM does monitor Windows services. It can tell you the CPU and memory for each service. It's monitored through WMI. But that's Application Performance Monitor. Our older Application Monitor does not handle services, but that product has reached it's end of life. We only sell APM now.

Does that clear anything up?

I guess it does. It looks like the product cant do what i need it to do. I need to know that a service is functioning correctly. DNS - Resolving correctly DHCP - serving correctly etc. I was actually told by the sales department that they expected this functionality to be in this release.. (hence my confusion)

APM will do what you want (we call them user experience monitors) for HTTP or HTTPS. APM v2 will provide a user-experience monitor for DNS, SQL Server, Oracle, and other DBs. You'll be able to do DHCP monitors via scripts. APM v2 is coming in a few months, so if you can stay tuned, we'll quickly get to what you're looking for.
