What is the best method to monitor UP & DOWN on 200 servers?

We are about to use Adv Alerts to alert on Up & Down for over 200 servers (physical and virtual servers).

I plan to use a wild card in the Alert Trigger.

Does this put any extra load on the Orion NETPERFMON database for SQL polling compared to trying to alert on a per server node name?

I think you should be ok, a SQL query for status on 200 nodes should execute fairly quickly and not be that much of a burden on a SQL server (SHOULD).

key word is SHOULD

since there are no innerjoins or matrix statements on tables with millions of rows you should be very safe (again SHOULD)

I don't think that would present an appreciable load to the DB, but have you considered using a custom property to designate the 200 servers for the alert?

Would it take you too long to create a Yes/No property and assign it to the servers in the custom property editor and then designate the Yes option as a filter in the alert?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I'll be using a Custom Property for these 200 plus systems.

My main concern would be any constant SQL polling on our SQL database which is being pounded to near death already...
