NPM 9.5 sp1 system manager - unexpected error; quitting

I've got NPM SLX that was running fine on a 2003 server - 9.5 sp1 with hotfix.

Migrating to a 2008 server (virtual using hyper-v) - I do the 9.5 install and transfer licenses - add the sp1 and hotfix

Everything comes up fine EXCEPT - system manager will not launch and pops a window "Unexpected error; quitting" and thats it.

Also service manager displays blank icons but I'll post that separately.

Support had me repair the 9.5 install - and system manager came up fine and I migrated my nodes ok.
then we applied sp1 and it was broken again

downloaded fresh sp1 copy and retried, but still has the error

anyone seen this or similar on 2008 with a fix? (I know I can use web to do this but I'd like to not have the error just the same)

(also is there a way to get formatting into my questions? on preview carriage returns etc are ignored - everything is all jammed together without paragraphs)

I ran into this error. To correct I right clicked on the system manager program and selected run as administrator.

Do you see any Failure Audit in the Security event log?

Running Process Monitor trace could have helped there but it is not supported on Windows 2008 Server.

When you repaired the installation were you logged under a local admin account?

Do you see any events with further information in the Application, System or SolarWinds.Net Event logs?

There were no failed audits in the event logs related to the install in any of the sections.
I'll check out process monitor and see if I can pinpoint anything - I had to back out to the old server for the time being.

We just did a fesh install of NPM 9.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 and I am experiencing this same problem when I attempt to launch the System Manager. I also get the same error when I attempt t launch Monitor Polling Engines under Advanced Features.

Orion is new to our company and we are trying to get this up ASAP so I hope you guys have a fix for this?

Have you opened a support ticket and per Yann post earlier, is there anything in the logs he mentions?

So after repair installs and uninstall/reinstall with no effect, I called and got Calvin in support.
He spoke with Matt and he said it sparked him to check permissions in 2008 server.

It appears that the Network Service may need admin access to files in order for system manager and service manager to launch properly.

Calvin added Network Service to the administrators and added permissions in the solarwinds directory, iis directory and temp dir.

We also disabled UAC (which I hate in Vista as well) (User Access Control) and we ran a repair install.

With that - both issues were fixed, not sure if it was UAC disable or the network service permissions add - I'd try the UAC and see if that fixes without having to mess with the other permissions if you ran across this

Issue is resolved though - we also applied SP1 and had no issues, system manager and service manager both work
(note: service manager doesnt display the Web service - but I can always stop/start that thru IIS)

Instead of completely disabling UAC, aren't there security policy options you can change so that this will work with UAC still enabled?

Well, disabling UAC did the job and it would seem that no other changes were necessary. Thanks for this advice!

I don't think that giving Network Services full admin acces should be necessary and I would stronly recomend against it if at all possible. Wouldn't just Read or even Modify access be enough?

Can a SolarWinds engineer please respond and verify exactly what level of access is required? Considering how much access this system has to our infrastructure I want to take all necessary security precautions and not just give full admin access to solve problems, thanks!
