Database replication/failover

We are a large governmet with very high number of nodes, application and interfaces and currently we have hot standby for redundancy but the database is still one point of failiure. Do you provide any recommendation, best practise, case study for someone who succeeded in designing failover/replication of the database you can direct me to?

If you are looking at application level replication, Double-Take and Wansync are two applications that I have seen used for SQL database replication.
