NPM and LEM

Now that solarwinds has Log and Event Manager, will parts of it be used to enhance the syslog/snmp/message centre aspects of NPM or will it be "we have another product for that purpose".

Neither Kiwi syslog or NPM's is adequate and is somewhat dated.

Can we get more detail about what you're hoping to do, or what problems you're hoping to solve that you can't today with syslog/SNMP in NPM (or Kiwi)? That would help better answer the question of whether LEM or future improvements to NPM/Kiwi are the answer.

I don't know about Prowl's thoughts but mine have been we haven't seen any tangible efforts around either of these functions for some time. You still cannot manage either of these two aspects from the web but simply acknowledge. I have remarked in threads prior that these systems needed work and while I have many aspects of NPM migrate to a web UI these haven't been touched yet.

Any thorough network management application needs to also be a syslog/SNMP collector and I feel that Solarwinds has not put any development effort in this piece of Orion in quite some time.

This is simply my thoughts being a Solarwinds customer for about 6 years and this is an area I have been longing for an improvement in.

agree w/ mdriskell. I have not ever been able to successfully utilize syslog w/ NPM as it "puts a hurting" the main server and the environment just can't support it. It is a shame I had to purchase another product to do what NPM should have been accomplishing for the last 3 or 4 years.

A big item would be to have an option to show a count of an alert, instead of showing the alert 5000 times.

So let's say I have a cisco switch with a fan problem. I don't want it to fill the screen, I just want to see the alert once with a colum that shows how many times the alert was received. This would also require that you can clear all 5000 occurances at once.

It doesn't take many of the mass alerts to make the alerting functions impossible to use as it just scrolls. I also don't want to create a special filter to remove a particular message everytime a switch acts up.

I had several more items that I will have to add later. But the above item was the biggest concern.
