I posted the following as a support request:
Every month or two when our UNIX team applies HP-UX updates, from Orion's point of view the servers gain a new network interface (e.g. lan0 HP PCI 1000Base-SX Release B.11.11.25) and loose an existing interface (e.g. lan0 HP PCI 1000Base-SX Release B.11.11.24). This causes two issues:
- The "new" interface is not monitored unless someone remembers to go into Orion and manually add it.
- The historical data for the "old" interface is lost if we delete the old interface. If we don't delete the old interface, we have to live with warning regarding the down interface for a very long time.
We see the same issue if a Windows Server drive is rebuilt causing it to pick up a new serial number.
Is there a way to reconcile two network interfaces to merge them together? Is there a way to reconcile two volumes to merge then together?
Support suggests that some SQL magic might be able to accomplish the goal of merging the old and new data but has no knowledge of how to do this. They also suggested contacting HP to see if they would stop renaming the network interface cards with each software update (which I am not going to do).
Does anyone else suffer from the same issues, and have you found a work around to keep from loosing the historical data? It just doesn't seem right that you would have to loose all of your historical data. I asked them to post this as a feature request, but have a feeling others have had the same challenge.
