I applied the sharepoint 2010 template on my two sharepoint front end servers and a few components are working but the rest are either unknow or down. Do I need to do something else to configure these conponents?
It looks like your Windows Performance Counters on that server need to be rebuilt. On that host, restart the "Remote Registry" service. Then at a command prompt execute the following command.
lodctr /r
Then try testing the failed components again to see if that resolved the issue.
I started the remote registry service but it stopped after a few minutes. I can see the event log saying the remote registry service terminated unexpectedly. while it was up the components that were in an unknown status changed to green but the ones that show down still showed down. Are these services suppose to exist in all sharepoint farms or are they otpional and have you ever seen the remote registry service crash on a sharepoint server like this before?
The issue you're encountering I believe is related to a memory leak in the Remote Registry Service that is fixed with a patch available from Microsoft. The following KB articles provide additional details and a link to download the Microsoft hotfix.
