What do you do for Disaster Recovery?

Morning all,

I've recently been given the task of updating our (woeful) IT disaster recovery procedures and processes, lucky man that I am . This got me thinking - it's very nice having NCM backing up every config on our network, but what happens if we need a config and NCM isn't available? Figuring that some of the very clever people on these forums have probably already been down this route, can I ask the following?

Has anyone put into place an automated "copy" of the most recent NCM device configs to somewhere else?
If so, have you chosen an off-site location or an alternate location on-site?
What method have you used?
Is there anything else I should be thinking about?

Hi John,

I suppose you know but to be sure -- also for the others: There is an export config job (in Win32 client) that you can use to copy the backed up configs somewhere else. The path must be accessible from NCM server but e.g. network drive is good.

Hi Johns,

My Orion server and my backup system are in different sites, so I've always felt covered in regards to a serious DR issue, but for ease of access it rates pretty low on the scale.

Yes, it's one of the scheduled jobs.

Yeah, we thought the same until a major SAN issue left us unable to either boot any servers (we are fully boot from SAN) or restore anything (as there was no disk to restore to!!) - and this was with a dual data centre solution

Fortunately the network etc stayed up, but if we had suffered a network issue we would have been a bit stuck.

Jiri - Thanks for that - don't suppose there is any chance of adding ftp/sftp functionality in the future (I'm thinking copying the files to remote storage somewhere (rather than a "local" share)??

It's not a priority.

Scheduling a script that will also compress the (text) configs before tranfer shouldn't be difficult.

You could then.. use MOZY to back them up online where they will be accessible from any Internet location.
