Using Orion as an asset management piece

Does anyone use Orion to do hardware/asset management, and if so, how do have you been able to modify orion to fit those needs?  We are looking for something that will allow us to track a piece of hardware from purchase to retirement, and also track it's various roles throughout it's life.  If no one has done this with Orion, does anyone have a good solution that they use?

You can setup custom properties then apply it to nodes. but that takes forever. We use a custome written database for that. I dont recomment either. :-)
