Trying to Monitor a web URL but get error that its already monitored when I try to add it as a node...but its not??

Hello,

I'm trying to set up a basic http monitor for our company website. Since its an http URL...I would think I'd want to add it as an external node, then assign the http monitor. However when I go to do this, it tells me its already being monitored....but I cannot locate it as a node anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

When you create an external node you have to define an IP address or DNS hostname (that ultimately resolves to an IP address). It's likely that you're trying to create an External node using your web servers DNS name, SAM is in turn attempting to resolve that name to an IP address and finding that this node is already being managed. You can assign the HTTP User Experience monitor to this existing node.

We could do that….but our issue is we want to monitor the site as it would render from the internet…as if a customer was viewing it. The issue with monitoring it locally is the firewall could be the point of failure…and the alert would never fire, yet a customer trying to hit the site would be getting 404’s

In that case I'll assume your web server is NAT'd behind the firewall and that it's currently managed in Orion using it's RFC address. If that's the case then add a new external node using the NAT'd IP address of the web server instead of the FQDN.
