So I am evaluating APM and I just got the server setup and added some nodes but is there a place to configure email notifications? Where do I put in my SMTP server?

Basic and advanced alerts are configured from the Orion server itself.
You can manage alerts from your Orion website, but you cannot configure/edit some attributes including email. You will need to do this from within the actual server. Log into your Orion server via Remote Desktop or locally and navigate to START - All Programs - SolarWinds Orion - Alerting, Reporting, and Mapping - Advanced Alert Manager.
