NPM and NCM upgrade considerations

Hi,

I have taken over Solarwinds NPM and NCM from colleague, and I need to make upgrade to the newest versions of both product.

Is there anything I need to consider with saving modifications to some part of NPM or NCM?

Maybe some alerts or something else?

I don't have information if system has something customized, so I wan't to check everything I can so I don't loose something important after upgrade.

Or is everything preserved from one version to another with upgrade?

Hi everyone,

just wanted to say that problem is solved with upgrade of UDT to newest version.

After upgrading this component, all remaining alerts were succesfully migrated.

The few upgrades I've done, I've never had a problem losing anything such as alerts or functionality. I would recommend using the upgrade tool. It will ask what your environment currently is and what you want to step up to and then give you a path and links to the downloads. Product Upgrade Advisor | SolarWinds Customer Portal

Just make sure you have DB backup and if in a VM a snapshot all customization is in the DB so in the upgrade you will not lose anything.

I have finished NPM upgrade and have some skipped web-based definitions.

Alert me when a rogue MAC address appears on network, Aletr me when a rogue DNS name appears on network, and 6 more.

Migration message says next: Object/properties used in trigger/reset conditions of this alert are not yet supported in new web-based alerting.

What is with this, and why I don't have all the functionality I used to?

You should be able to see those alerts in C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Alertmanager.exe

On a base level - are things working? Web Engine, At least 1 Alert, Reports still in tact , etc?

You may be seeing new 'presets' or out of the box features/alerts/etc.... if they are not active just go past and check your alerts - that they made it through and are still active and working.

You can make sure you have no alerting errors with

select name, lasterrortime, lasterror from Orion.AlertDefinitions

where lasterror is Not NULL

order by lasterrortime desc

Don't do it !!

If you have custom alerts they will break , In our case going from 11.5.2 to 11.5.3 broke all of our alerting and as of now we don't have our critical disk space alerts back .

If its working stick with it , I don't trust Solarwinds upgrades.

Noticed our custom alerts what we created a copy and redefined got labelled as OutofBox post upgrade. [just a glitch understandably if you name them the same]

If your comfortable you can go and update this via the SolarWinds DataBase Manager in the AlertConfigurations table:

SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM [dbo].[AlertConfigurations] where CreatedBy not like 'NULL' and Canned = 'true'

Confirm the ones that are ticked against the 'Canned' column.

Select the 'Enable Table Editing' button and untick your personal alerts.

This is possibly also a good way to lock out people from accidentally editing and breaking your hard work

I have opened Database Manager, there is only SQL Servers, section, with no server under it. Only options I can choose from are Add server and Add default server.

I try to double click on this file, and also right click and open in txt editor, but there are 5-10 lines of worthless code.

don't know how to check this and see alerts in this file

Click Add server then add your SW SQL server with the correct credentials and it'll give you the tables you can access.

I agree with Scott Dawson, do not upgrade if you have many custom alerts. We have over 1500 alerts, and a decent amount are custom. We backed out when we saw this issue. I am not sure why they would make a change like this all of a sudden.

Click add default server. It should show up, if all your credentials were in place during the install.
