Help with seedfile.txt

Hi everyone,

i'd like to import a list of IPs into our Orion installation.

Reading the manual I discovered the "Network Discovery with the Seedfile.txt" - method. Sounded pretty charming, tried it, didn't work.

Anyone has an idea ? I added the following lines (as a test) :

Nodes
172.16.5.2

Additionally, I changed the community string values to match our configs.

Network discovery gives me a "Network discovery attempted without any discovered subnets first".

Okay. Adding each subnet für every router isn't an option (1300+ routers!)...

Can anybody help me on this ?

You need to put a few spaces before the IP address. That's true for all of the lines in that text file:

Settings
    Auto Select Subnets = False
    Auto Select Subnet Size = 17
    PING Timeout = 2000
    Max Concurrent PINGs = 350
    Inter PING Delay = 100
    PINGs Per IP Address = 2
    SNMP Timeout = 1500
    SNMP Retries = 2
    Max Concurrent SNMP = 350
    SNMP Restarts = 3
    SNMP Restart Delay = 10000
    Max Concurrent DNS = 400

Community Strings
public
private

Nodes
    10.199.1.20
    10.199.1.8
    10.199.1.70

inserting spaces fixed the problem. but...

i only want to insert specific nodes. network discovery starts to scan the complete (estimated) subnet. anyway to avoid this ? if network discovery needs to scan all subnets of any of the given IPs... this would take days :-)

another thing : it looks like the discovery only show nodes that are not already in the database. true ?

Check your settings. They should say:

Settings
Auto Select Subnets = False

And each line Settings must have spaces in front of it, too.

Hello all / Josch.

I saw your post "Network Discovery with the Seedfile.txt" for the Orion Solarwinds product.

I've been trying to find where in Solar Winds I can use a seedfile, I don't have Orion, just the Engineers Toolset, however I think it should still work? Having a fair size network its taking days to auto discover the devices!

Can you advise which part of the Orion toolset you used to do this?

Unfortunately this can only be done with Orion at this time.

I'm fighting this now... I've tried numerous spaces/tabs/setups in the file and I can't seem to get even a test set of 16 IP's to work. It looks like it polls them, but doesn't import - thought I can verify snmp individually.

Seedfiles are picky. I'm not sure what yours looks like but Tabs and no-spaces between the nodes and the ip are important.
