Interfaces vs. ports in Network Sonar Discovery

Thwack Forum,

I do not have a clear understanding of the difference between "interfaces" vs. "ports" during a Sonar Discovery Import Wizard session.

The Administrators Guide did not have any information on "ports" in it.

What is the difference between the two?

The reason I ask is because the wizard allows you to select which interface type, and then on the next screen, allows you to select ports.

The terms do seem synonymous.

I remember from training that "elements" can be "nodes", "interfaces", or "volumes".

I would like to know if selecting "ports" increases the element count on the specific polling engine which is assigned.

It sounds like you have UDT integrated with NPM.

Interfaces are for NPM and ports are for UDT.

NPM monitors the statistics (ie bandwidth; utilization) while ports monitors the port name, port number, MAC addresses of the devices connected to the port, VLANs, and Duplex mode.
