Without SNMP, Windows is in Unknown Group

Question

Hey Everybody,

We'll be adding Windows nodes using the ICMP only mode because we don't want to use SNMP. When we do so, the Windows machine winds up in the 'unknown' group. While we can successfully monitor many aspects of Windows using WMI, the machine is still in the unknown group.

There's gotta be a way around this, or must I endure the scorn of our CiscoWorks administrator?

Hi, Brent.  As you've correctly surmised, the SNMP Vendor information is blank for ICMP nodes, and thus they are classifed as 'unknown'.

There's no way around this at the moment.  Even if you were to directly edit your node database, any vendor information you manually changed would get wiped the next time your ICMP node got polled.

You could add a custom property named "Vendor Info" to each node and then change the grouping in each Orion resource to sort by your custom "Vendor Info" property instead of the default "Vendor".    I realize this is clunky and doesn't scale well, but it's the only workaround I can think of.

In the meantime, I've opened a customer feature request for this in our system to consider ways we can get Vendor information added to ICMP nodes.
