FTP User Experience problem

We're monitoring an FTP connection to a vsftp server which show's the application as 'up' when it is up, but when we stop vsftpd the applicaiton monitor continues to show 'up', and it does not seem to poll. When testing the monitor it hangs and never returns with a good or bad status. We're having this issue on several vsftpd servers.

Has anyone else had this issue and what can be done about it?

How long do you wait after taking the daemon down? The polling is not constant so you have to wait for the next test to happen. Can you manually test the FTP target file for access?

It is set to poll every 5 minutes. We waited a good 60 minutes after stopping the FTP service and the monitor never updated. During this time it retained the last good poll time, and displayed the next poll time as being 5 minutes from the last good. The time elapsed since last poll continued to increase.

When the FTP service is running, the monitor is good. It polls every 5 minutes and is 'up'. The ftp user can login and can access the test.txt file (We confirmed this manually as well).

The issue seems to be if the FTP service stops the poller hangs and never returns a good or bad status and we're not sure what to do about it. It also hangs when testing the monitor.

What version of vsftpd are you using?

After responding, can you open a support ticket? I'd like the support rep to increase the logging for the probes and take a look.

In this case we're using vsftpd-2.0.5, installed from the Red Hat vsftpd-2.0.5-16.el5 rpm.

We have also now tested against a Windows server running Serv-U 8.0.0.2 and are having the same issue.

We'll get a support ticket open.
