Cisco Switch Temperature

I am not sure if this is a dumb question but i have looked all over the manual and the forums. I LOVE Orion but it is lacking one thing.
I can get it to display the temperature of my switches. I get every other option on earth but no temp. Is anyone else doing this? If so please do share.

Hi Paul,

What other things are you monitoring on what kind of switch?
The only thing I get is CPU & Memory, as well as the interfaces.
Without customizable MIB support, you "shouldn't" be seeing anymore
than this. If you are, please let us know what your secret is!

Well when I said "I get every other option on earth" I really meant every other option I care about

I have Cisco 8 4506 switches and a 6509 all I am monitoring is Interfaces CPU and memory.

we did it. it's not pretty, but it works.
we ran snmp graph from the engineers edition to monitor the temperature and voltage levels of a couple critical routers and had it auto-update the results to a web page that we included in orion.
we also constantly monitor the number of web and ftp users on our outside web servers like this.

here's how we do it
setup snmp graph to monitor whatever you like, temperature, voltage, web users, and then have it auto-publish to the web directory. 'c:\inetub\solarwinds\netperfmon\snmpgraph\webservers.htm' for instance. then add 'custom html' resource to any orion view and put in the folowing html in the edit box

the current ftp and web users now shows up on our orion web site.
we also sometimes put a link to the snmpgraph page in the 'custom html' resource like this

I'm going to give that a try is well.
We have the Eng Edition running on a desktop PC, so I will have to map a directory on the Orion server, but it should work.
I haven't played with the SNMP graph yet, but it sure sounds promising.

Your solution to gaps in Orion reporting is fantastic. I have one question:
In your description you mentioned that you "...and then have it auto-publish to the web directory..."
Specifically how do you "auto-publish" from the SNMP Real Time Graph Utility?

Hit the custom button and then choose the Auto-Publish tab.

Very interesting Rog. We monitor tempurature to the rooms via UPS traps with HPOV. I have just installed Orion 7, and we are impressed with the features we have seen. I use HPOV now, and would like to migrate to Orion. If there is anyone that has some templates that I could use for better management. I would appreciate it.

Couple questions:

1. Do you need to leave the snmp graph utility running in order for the graph to keep updating?

2. If you want to do this for many custom devices, do you have to run a seperate snmp graph for each meaning you could possibly have tons of these running on your server?

3. If these need to be left running, what happens during a reboot then, does the info get lost or do you need to setup a services or batch file to run them?

I suppose you could just add multiple MIBs to one graph, but then it would be hard to scale different things and maybe hard to read some smaller lines.

Ok, I think I answered some of my own questions

1. Yes, the graph needs to be running.
2. You can run multiple snmp graph windows.
3. You can save the snmp graph which saves all the settings with it, then just use something like Firedaemon to create a service that will start that graph/s.

The tricky part would be using graphs that will use about the same scale so you could see more details of the lines and not have some that are almost flat at the bottom because you have one line that spikes really high.

I did what RogSchmidt suggested. The graph is fine! My problem is that the temp. It is the same all the time. I opened the cabinet where the switch is in but no temp change. I adjusted the aircon. Still no variation in the graph. Any one got an idea about what I should do to check the temp?

I tried this method, and it works for monitoring temperature from a 7206 router. However, I found that it was more usefull to use MRTG and then display the MRTG graphs on Orion pages. This also allowed us to use MRTG to set up alets when the temperature goes to high.

We had our AC unit die on us a few years back over a long weeked and only found out when everything crashed because of the heat. We didn't want that to happen again...
