Monitoring SQL Server via SNMP

Hello,

I'm brand new to Orion. I've been asked to set up application monitoring on sql servers. I know I will get hit with some questions from our database guys. Can someone help me out with this?

I see that we can monitor SQL Server via 3 different methods (SNMP, SQL, and WMI)

An account has been created on the database giving read-only access. I know I don't need credentials to monitor with SNMP, but all the WMI monitoring is failing due to credential failure. Will a database account not work for WMI?

When monitoring with SQL, I get "Login failed for user 'orionmonitor'". I know the username 'orionmonitor' and password are correct.

Thanks for any help you can give a newbie!

If you're SQL Server is using Mixed authentication mode a SQL user account will not work with WMI/RPC monitors as those would require Windows Administrator account permissions. If you don't have access to the SQL Server application itself to grant permissions or create users accounts then the "SQL Server 2005-2008 Performance (WMI)" template is your best bet. As stated previously though, this does require A windows Administrator account on that server to monitor via WMI.

If you're using a SQL database account you would use the "SQL Server 2005-2008 Performance (SQL)" template and need read access to the Master database.

An advantage of the SQL template is that since it is running queries for each metric, the response time of that query can be an indicator of a growing issue. The queries used could gradually be taking longer to retrieve the metrics being monitored. Grabbing the data via WMI would provide the metric, but it does not provide the response time of an actual SQL query.
