group/dependancies alerting

I've just inherited an orion install and just trying to get my head around terms and processes.

 

we are running 10.1 and apm 4

 

What i am trying to achieve is alerting by serice process

e.g. to deliver web access we have 2 proxies, 3 dns servers and a dhcp server.

the chain is like this [Internet] POP -> proxy1 -> dns/dns/dns -> proxy2       dhcp

all the individual nodes and services are monitored.  however i need to put a rule in saying

The following nodes and services must be up:

POP

proxy1 and isa

proxy2 and squid

dhcp and dhcp

 

only 1 of the following need to be up:

DNS

 

How do i create this type of rule? if possible that is. is it a groups or dependancy thing, I have no problem reading, just need to get a clue to start to get to grips with ORion, i just need a hand getting a head start.

this sounds like a Groups thing.

I would suggest to do the following:

You will need to create two groups:

• Group of DNS servers (let's call it 'DNS Group'). Add all three DNS servers here and what's important - set Status rollup to 'Best'. So if at least 1 DNS is up, the status of the whole group will be up.

• 2nd group, which will consist of all other servers (POP, proxy1 and isa, proxy2 and squid, DHCP...) and also 'DNS Group' will be member of this new 2nd group. 2nd group should have rollup status set to 'Worst' or 'Mixed' - that way the status of the whole group will change to Down or Warning if at least 1 member is not Up.
