Evaluate SAM in prod NPM

Hi we have a current implementation of NPM, NTA and IPAM.

I've been asked to evaluate SAM. Ideally we'd like to do this in the current prod system as a module to see how it integrates with what we have already set up.

questions would be

-is this recommended?

-we have some alerting setup in Alert Manager. I understand installing SAM changes this? what would happen to our alerts if we remove SAM later?

-does it need it's own database or does it just use the existing NPM/orion database we have?

-is it easy to remove should we not go ahead with purchasing SAM after?

Yes & No. Best practice would be to evaluate the product on a test server, but that doesn't allow you to see the full integration with your other products. If you do decide to evaluate in your production environment I recommend you take a backup of your current database. You'll also want to make sure your current modules are compatible with the SAM version you're going to evaluate. We release 7 new product versions today What are the versions of NPM, NTA, and IPAM you're running today?

The new version of SAM has the Alert Manager in the web, unlike the older versions of the Orion modules. This is why it would be important to see what version of the other products you're running.

SAM will leverage the same database if you install it on the current NPM/Orion server. If you install SAM on a different server it would needs its own database and would not allow for a single pain of glass.

Yes, you can use the control panel to remove just SAM. However, if there is a chance you think you will remove it (you won't, it's AMAZING) you should consider creating a database backup before installing the product.

We are running IPAM 4.3, NPM 11.0.1, NTA 4.1.0. So my reading of the matrix says we have to upgrade to NPM 11.5 in order to install the SAM 6.2 module.

So can you clarify what the Alert Manager on the web is? its just the same alert configuration except in the browser? will the original AlertManager.exe still be there?

Alert manager: Basically everything before the new NPM and SAM had alerts managed via alertmanager on the server. Now you can do *all* of the alerts from the orion web console, and you have a lot more flexibility in how alerts are triggered/conditions/etc. Gigantic, gigantic improvement. All of this was rolled out in NPM 11.5, so all the new products that have updated to use this new web based alerting (WPM/SAM off the top of my head) will require NPM 11.5

Correct. SAM 6.2 includes the new Web Based Alert Manager, which will require that you upgrade to NPM 11.5 before you can install SAM 6.2.
