additonal pollers

I have a question for those who have secondary pollers. Do you have them in the same location? Or a diverse geographical locations?? I was told by a regional sales manager and an architect from solarwinds when I purchased the addtional polling engine license that it was possible, and to keep the IIS server and SQL database in a separate location than the polling engines. Now after purchasing servers for two polling engines one in WI and one in TN I am being told that is not possible, without upgrading to version 9 and of course now buying the EOC. I sure hope someone else has done this before and I feel hoodwinked by Sales manager!!!

It's possible to put the pollers in a separate location, but it's not recommended. EOC and multiple Orion servers is a much better approach.

Denny any reason why it is not recommended? Going back to the well for another 5K is not going to sit really well right now.....

We don't recommend because the additional poller is forced to write to the database across the WAN, which is a very latency-sensitive operation. If you have awesome latency, it'll work. If not, you'll drop some data. Also, with the EOC solution, you'll be protected from data loss in the event of a WAN outage.
