What are the differences between these Status and Response Time options?

I am trying to find out some information on why one would select ICMP over Status and Response Time Agent when viewing the resources and statistics to monitors.

Haven't had much luck defining what each one is better for, pros/cons etc.

From reading it looks like ICMP can be set to let us know that say - a server goes down - it waits 2 min (or a configurable number) to page out.. but the SNMP one is more instant?

Our entire environment is virtualized with VMware.

You should use the ICMP status except in cases where the node does not allow ICMP. That is it.

The up/down behavior should not change, its just a matter of offering an alternative way to confirm we can reach a device since some classes of devices ignore ICMP. SNMP has more overhead and takes SIGNIFICANTLY longer to respond, so you can't even remotely compare ICMP response times to SNMP times.

Consider this, if you have the Agent deployed to your Windows / Linux hosts and the Agent service stops working on one or more of those hosts for some reason you will get a node down alert even if the node isn't actually down because the Agent isn't responding. This happens in our environment every couple weeks and I'm considering changing to ICMP.

u are getting those down events becoz of that option is selected... in my view its better to do via ICMP and if u still want to know when the agent stops working then there is a different alert that can be set for agent connection status...
