SWEmailNotify Error
eppler
Since upgrading to version 7, SolarWinds cannot send alert emails. The actual error message is (located in Events under Critical System Error):
Error sending E-Mail message. Cannot create 'SWEMailNotify' Object. ActiveX component can't create object.
Is there a DLL that I need to manually register with regsvr32? Thanks,
Steven Eppler

eppler,
Thats a strange one.... Orion V7 does not use the 'SWEMailNotify' dll anymore. It now uses the Windows CDO APIs. Sounds like you may have partial install. Part V6 and part V7. I suggest completely uninstalling V6 (Your database will still be in tact. The uninstall doesn't touch your data) and then reinstalling V7. Also, be sure to shutdown the NetPerfMon Service prior to uninstalling V6.
Be sure to let me know if you cannot resolve this issue since the 'SWEMailNotify' DLL is now obsolete.

Don,
Thanks for the info. I bet that was added to the log during the uninstall of V6, because when I restarted after the V6 uninstall it gave me a few service errors, nothing major. But, if left me chasing the wrong problem.
It seems the problem was related to some name lookup issues. I had to change from the DNS name of our mail server to the IP - strange. I can look up the name properly with nslookup and other tools, but it won't send email through Orion. But everything works now. Thanks again.

PS - What DNS server does Orion use? The ones specified in your computer's network setup, or does it go to the root servers? We have two DNS servers, an internal and an external, so if it finds the external IP it won't be able to contact the mail server.
