Linux SNMP Asset Inventory

I have searched through the docs and I am getting real mixed results out of SNMP and Agent based polling.

I have 2 RHEL7 Linux servers configured as identical as I can make them. I am using SNMP v3 and successfully get past the test button.

One server has the Asset Inventory check box show up and the other does not.

Also what is enabled "Out of the Box" for SNMP and Linux?

Asset inventory relies on the vendor agent (Dell OpenManage, HP Insight Manager, IBM whatever they call it today, etc) for it's information. If you don't have that enabled/running on the box, you won't get the asset info.

So these are both Red Hat 7 servers. Both configured the same. I used SNMPWalk to ensure that both are able to be gotten to and they both have the agent installed and running. I have them both nodes configured the same.

Why would one have assets inventory and not the other?

How do I enable it if the check box is not there?

I am trying to make a custom poller with SNMP and following this HOWTO I get stuck on the Linux group not showing up so that I can pick the node to test on.

Do I have to make the SNMP node a separate node than a Linux node?

Changing the machine type by using a custom SNMP OID is different than getting asset information (your original question).

Related to this item (custom OID), please verify that you have the following:

a script on the target machine (not the poller) that outputs the correct text - whatever you want the machine type to be. (Ubuntu or Ubuntu 18.04 or Debian or whatever)
an entry in the snmpd.conf file that sets up a specific OID and runs the script from #1 above as a result
That on the node itself (not the poller) you can do an SNMP "get" of that OID and get the response you want
on the poller, you can do an SNMPWalk of this node, and get the new OID as part of the responses

If all those things work, then let me know where in the next part of the process (in the Orion console, you go to Settings, All Settings, Manage Pollers, create your new poller) you are getting stuck.

Alternatively you could simply install the Linux Agent and you would not need to do all these additional steps.

For monitoring the asset inventory you need to install the openmanage agent if it's a Dell vendor server.

I agree with adatole , Different vendors supporting different agent. In my case, I have Dell servers where we deployed Linux Redhat and centos , additionally we installed the openmanage agent for monitoring the asset inventory of server.

So both of these servers are in AWS. One has the asset inventory and the other does not. I can see software installed on the one that has the asset inventory. I believe that it is pulling this data from SNMP.

Does the other node have Asset Inventory listed as an option when you click 'List Resources'?

That is actually the whole problem. It is not an option on any of them that I have set up now except for one and I am pretty sure that I am setting them all up the same way.

Hardware sensors - yes. Generic inventory - no. You don't need vendor-specific agents to poll OS inventory. E.g. stock CentOS installed on a VMWare VM will have an "asset inventory" option, while a custom SNMP deployment will not - in my experience.

In my case, making and deploying an SNMP package that wasn't part of the OS disabled asset inventory.

r1200gsdave: if the problem host has the default (part of the OS) SNMP service - maybe try uninstalling and re-installing it. If it has a non-default SNMP - definitely uninstall and install the OS-specific flavor of it (part of OS distribution).

If that doesn't help, sometimes waiting a day does (for me). I'd enroll a fresh Linux VM into Solarwinds, "asset inventory" not showing up. A day later (no changes to the host) - it does. No clue why that is.

Asset inventories appear to be reported using the following OIDs:

DisplayName: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.2
Version: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.101
Publisher: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.4
InstallDate: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.5

There's an SNMP walk tool in the Solarwinds install folder you can use to pull all available OIDs from a device and see what's there.

Running Debian I found different information available when using SNMP v2c, SNMP v3, and the Linux agent. I don't know why this difference exists.

I have used the SNMP walk tool on both nodes. I did that before I tried to configure the node using the GUI.

Apologies for bumping an older thread, but what ever came of this? I was just talking to one of my admins about how to discover which linux boxes are running Tomcat (but weren't installed through RHEL Yum), and I noticed we don't have asset inventory as an option.

At a minimum, the SNMP binaries need to be installed so the agent can automatically configure SNMP to use loopback.
