SNMP Value to text string

I've set up my SNMP component type in the SAM and have it returning values, but on some it returns me a 1, 2, 3, or 4. Not very informative. Is there a way to have Solarwinds take that return and display a text string? for example, 1 = self test, 2 = power outage, etc.

In the UDP utility, edit your SNMP poller and click on the Show Advanced Options button. Change the format drop-down to Enumeration, then click on Map Values. If the MIB for your device is already in SolarWinds, a table of raw values and associated text values will appear. Click OK, then Finish, and you're good to go. If the device MIB isn't in SolarWinds, you'll have to manually add your raw (numeric) values and their equivalent text strings, then click OK and Finish.

The text strings should then show up in the poller display after the next poll and refresh.

The original question was about a component in SAM Application monitor, and not in Universal Device Poller from the Solarwinds console. I too don't care for "2". 2 means what to the normal person?

Yes, you're right... I didn't read the original question carefully enough. Sorry about that! Part of the reason I misread it is that I don't use the SAM SNMP component monitor for the very reason stated; from my perspective, that monitor is all but useless. If you want to use it, you'll have to figure out what each potential return value means; one way to do that is to obtain a copy of the MIB file and read through it. Another way is to use a MIB browser (either the one that comes with SolarWinds, or a third-party one) and browse or walk the device MIB to determine what the numeric values translate to. Many of the integer MIB variables that are of interest from a monitoring perspective are binary, either up/down, on/off, etc. Those typically return a 0/1 or 1/2, and once you know what you're looking for, you can set your threshold in the SNMP component monitor. If it's only one or two OIDs that you're monitoring, it's not too bad; otherwise, there's a lot of manual work involved.
