Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Customizing views (advanced)
duncan_922
Hi there, new to these forums.
I am trying out Orion NPM/SolarWinds ET for the company I work for. Everything is going great except that I wanted to try out creating custom views and I've hit block. My boss asked me if it was possible to make a view where we could show the Node, status and Avg. Response time side by side. Ex:
Node: Test 1 Status: Up Avg. Response time: 1ms
Node: Test 1 Status: Up Avg. Response time: 2ms
I've been reading the Admin guide and although it doesn't seem to be possible at first glance, there are a lot of references for more advance information on Page 4 ("see Setting Default Views on page 4", "see Editing User Accounts on page 4", "see Adding a Custom Menu Item on page 4", (page 4 must be a big page)), but try as I might (please don't laugh) I
can't find stupid page 4
. Does anybody know where this page is, or if what I want is possible?
Thanks in advance

Hi Duncan, you can do this with Orion "Report Writer".
If you have a Solarwinds Orion maintenance contract it is downloadable from the customer downloads page - additional components.
It allows you to add peak, min, max & average latency as well as others such as packet loss to a single report over just about any time period up to the last 12 months.
The same goes for interface utiilzation, errors, etc.

Thanks for your reply NG.
I was able to get around it by using the "Top XX Nodes by Average Response time" and setting up a filter with the Nodes that I needed.
If you do not mind, I'd like to ask something else.
To give you some background, I work for a "backbone" company and we are evaluating Solarwinds. One of the ideas we have is that we'd like to create a Web account for each of our customers in which they can monitor their side of the network. So far it's been coming along great, but a problem I've found is that I'd like to let the customer monitor their nodes and the interfaces that their nodes connect to without them seeing stats for the node.
So far I've found no way to do this. If it ain't possible at least I'd like to edit the Node Details property so that it won't show information that the customer does not need to see.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're doing fine with the Web Interface Duncan.
Have you played with the Custom Property Editor?
You can limit views on the Customer's web page using any property you've configured in CPE. You can also filter the Web views using these Custom properties which can be assigned to either Nodes, Interfaces or Volumes.
Limiting the Web account based on a Custom property along with the filtering of the views on the web interface should give you the granularity you are looking for.

duncan_922,
I think I understand what you are trying to do... but I'm not sure.
If you are trying to allow your customer to monitor Nodes, but not view any stats, you could define a new "Node Details" view for them without any statistics. Create a new "Node Details" type of view called "Customer Router" for example. Then assign the new "Customer Router" view as the default "Node Details" view on the Customer's Account page. Place whatever information you would like them to see on the "Customer Router" page, but leave off any stats.
When you login, you would see the default "Node Details" view, but your customers would see the "Customer Router" view when they login.

Thank you NG and Don for your replies, you've been very helpful. NG - I have not yet tried to use the Custom Property Editor, but it sounds like a good idea and I'll give it a shot today.
Don - First, thank you for taking the time to read into my message. You got the general idea of what I want to do, but not quite. As part of the SLA I have with my clients, I must give them a way to monitor "their side of the network" and at the end of the month, any problems or down time gets reported and we reimburse them if so applies. Pretty standard fare for this kind of business. We are thinking of using Orion for both monitoring and the Web Interface to comply with the customer's monitoring. I created a nice page for say, customer Alpha, and they can see all there is to see about their Node and Interfaces, however I need to also let them see and monitor the interface Node Alpha connects to on another Node without having them see the properties for the whole Node (Beta) because it belongs to another client.
If this isn't possible at all, I wanted to remove the information that I don't want Customer Alpha to see about Node Beta, like Last Boot Time, Operating System, IOS Image, etc. I could to this by altering the HTML code, but then I'd be doing so for all views. I'll follow NG's advice today and try out Custom Property Editor, but if you have any other suggestions on how I would go about achieving my goals, I'll very much appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

I was also going to suggest you build a custom Node Details page as per Don's Post.
As far as account & view limitations go, you may run into issues if you use both Node & Interface custom properties to limit the Customer's view as per this post:

Thanks for linking that NG. Bleearg13 seemed to be trying to do basically the same thing I wanted to do, but according to Don it's not possible. I wasn't able to achieve it through custom properties either, but I learned some new stuff along the way.
Thanks
