Please Help!
My organization is running a couple of different instances of Orion and I am finding that our performance is lacking, ie. polling completion percentages are dropping, web console is slow to respond or times out, and we are seeing may alerts that we are not able to explain. We have been running Orion for several years which date back to when APM was a module of Orion and not a stand alone product. As such each of our polling engines have NPM and APM installed on them...
We are currently running SolarWinds Orion Core 2011.1.2, APM 4.2.0, NPM 10.1.3, IVIM 1.1.2.
We have a primary polling server and 4 additional polling servers.
All of the polling engines have the same hardware\OS:
Win2003 SP2
Intel Xeon CPU @ 3.0GHz
4.0GB RAM
Our database is on a dedicated SQL server:
Win2003 R2 x64
Intel Xeon CPU @ 3.0GHz
30GB RAM
We also have an additional web console server running the same hardware/OS as our polling engine servers.
We are polling roughly around 5000 elements per polling server on four of the servers. The last is in a secured VLAN only monitoring a handful of servers. We are running APM 4.2 and have several thousand pollers spread across all polling engines. We use mix of different APM types but generally have more SQL user experience monitors, and this is quickly growing as our enterprise continues to grow.
I have found several articles on the forums that explain the process for polling engine tuning, in particular:
Poller Tuning - Community Tips
This is an excellent article but does not touch on the subject of how to tune for combined NMP and APM polling. Unless I have misread or misunderstood the document I did not see anything of APM polling mentioned. Are there any resources here which explain the polling of a combined NPM/APM implementation and the considerations which need to be taken into account when performing polling engine tuning? I have failed to locate it if there is, if not does anyone have any resources I can take a peek at to get our system operating at its optimal performance?
Also, as a side note, as I stated above my organization has been running Orion for a while and when it was originally installed, APM was a module of NPM not a stand alone product. I want to upgrade to the latest and greatest of NPM and SAM 5.0. I have been reading about the upgrade process. I have watched a couple of customer training videos on this site (which were great, by the way, please keep 'em coming) and I am seeing some conflicts in the blog posts and the videos. For example, in your customer training video:
http://www.solarwinds.com/resources/webcasts/solarwinds-server---application-monitor-5-0-customer-training.html
it was stated that the stand alone SAM 5.0 uses the same database as NPM but in the blog article:
Orion Architecture
It is stated that this is not supported - specifically in the Stand Products (Shared DB) section bullet point 2 states 'We do not support two instances of Orion products sharing the same database, but multiple Orion database can share the same SQL Server host if it is appropriately sized'
maybe I have misunderstood the documentation, which is totally inside the realm of possibility...but anyone could let me know, I would be very grateful!
Best regards to all!
