JMX Monitoring in OC4J

We are attempting to use JMX to monitor our OC4J environments. Unfortunately, OC4J doesn't follow the standard RMI protocol. To get around this with the smaller monitors like jconsole, you must pass the arguments "-J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=oracle.oc4j.admin.jmx.remote " along with several additional libraries in the classpath. Is there a way to pass these type of customizations into orion?

Hi Ewittry,

It is possible to do this customization. Go to APM install folder, typically "C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\APM" and go to jmxbridge subfolder. Now copy your additional libraries to lib folder. Next go to jsl folder, create backup of jsl.ini and open it for editing. Locate [java] section and update it in following way (changes marked bold):

param01 = %APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\SolarWinds.JMX.Bridge.jar;%APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\lib\log4j-1.2.16.jar;%APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\lib\wlclient.jar;%APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\lib\wljmxclient.jar;%APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\lib\mylibrary1.jar;%APM_HOME%\jmxbridge\lib\mylibrary2.jar
param02 = -Denv.allusersprofile=%ALLUSERSPROFILE%
param03 = -Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=oracle.oc4j.admin.jmx.remote
param04 = com.solarwinds.jmxbridge.Service

Ofcourse, replace mylibraryx.jar with names of the libraries previously added to lib folder. Before saving the file you need to stop SolarWinds JMX Bridge service and after saving start the service again. Now you should be able to access your OC4J environment with APM.

I've implemented the prescribed changes in APM. However, attempting to setup the monitor is giving me some difficulty with the URI.

It appears to be setting the URI to

service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://host:port/jmxrmi

The only part I can seem to change is the bolded /jmxrmi. From other tools, I have been able to get the following URI format to work.

service:jmx:rmi://host:port

Is there a way to customize this aspect as well?

You can only modify the last part of URL, the service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://host:port part is generated. This format follows JMX service URL standard and should be accepted by JMX server. Do you have difficulties with connection?

Yes. The generated URL fails with "Cannot connect to JMX server
Check connection properties, please."

I've also tried it in jconsole as well with no avail. This also failed with the following exception "Exception in thread "JConsole.addUrl" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid JMX URL: service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi:/
/192.168.227.21:13001/jmxrmi"

I don't have any concrete evidence, but I'm guessing that OC4J doesn't support the JNDI aspect.

From looking through the documentation, it appears that OC4J doesn't really allow the JNDI lookup.
